Montrasio Arte was founded in Monza in 1939.
Nowadays the gallery is dedicated to curate both historic and contemporary exhibitions, which cast a critique and innovative view on the work of established artists whose works have been somewhat overlooked.
When the gallery was founded it presented mostly artists from 19th and 20th century, such as De Nittis, Fattori, Hayez, Balla, Bucci, Martini, Marussig and Wildt.

In 1960 the gallery moved to via De Amicis and starting from 1965 organised a very rich exhibition program oriented to Contemporary Art.

We recall some of the most important solo shows dedicated to: Renato Birolli, Alfredo Chighine, Roberto Crippa, Lucio Fontana, Fausto Melotti, Ennio Morlotti, Emilio Scanavino, Tancredi Parmeggiani, Floriano Bodini, Leonardo Cremonini, Renato Guttuso, Karl Plattner, Antonio Recalcati, Bepi Romagnoni, Giuseppe Zigaina. In 2001 Montrasio Arte opened a new gallery in Milan in the historic Brera district (it has moved in via porta Tenaglia). Since 1990 the gallery has been under the direction of Francesca and Ruggero Montrasio, the third generation of the family. From this moment it started focusing on international artists, such as Joseph Beuys, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Dennis Oppenheim, Reuven Israel, Salvatore Scarpitta.
Since its foundation, Montrasio Arte collaborated with important Museums and national and international Institutions. Among the most recent collaborations: “Dennis Oppenheim” (Museo Palazzo Poggi, Bologna 2018); “Salvatore Scarpitta. Racing cars” (CAM, St. Louis 2018); “Joseph Beuys. I gesti, le azioni, i documenti iconici del mitico artista tedesco” (Fondazione Ivan Bruschi, Arezzo 2016);

“Bepi Romagnoni. Racconto interrotto” (Galleria del Credito Valtellinese, Milano 2014); “Graham Sutherland” (Museo della Permanente, Milano 2011; Fondazione Magnani Rocca, Mamiano 2012); “Lucio Fontana” (Museo Bodini, Varese 2006); “Leonardo Cremonini” (Museo della Permanente, Milano 2002; Pinacoteca Nazionale, Bologna 2003); “Guido Marussig” (Museo Revoltella, Trieste 2003).

The Gallery is also a publishing company (MontrasioArte Edizioni). The catalogues include more than 100 titles and about 20 publications for Italian and foreign Museums. The most recent ones are “Trappolando”, a monography on Fausto Melotti, “Una nota che non c’è” dedicated to Giacinto Cerone, and a volume about Gianfranco Ferroni’s work.

In 2007 Montrasio Arte created the Harlem Studio Fellowship, nonprofit artist in residence program in New York. Since the creation of the Milan venue in 2001, Montrasio Arte has been producing, exposing and promoting young artists’ works, often exhibiting them in relation to the Master’s works.
